Schery Markee Sullivan’s early childhood was spent in the Bronx. Her Mother had been a graphic artist before traveling the world as a dancer and acrobat. Her Great Aunt painted on multiple media, including fine china, porcelain, tapestries, tiles, and paper. There was always an influence of artistry in the home. Schery began her formal training studying with Josephine Belloso at St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn. She then studied both painting and dance in the Creative Arts Program at NYU. Abstract artist Robert Kaupelis was Schery’s teacher during this formative time. She then studied dancing with the brilliant choreographer, June Lewis, at Brooklyn College and became a member of June’s company. All of these teachers were so generous in their guidance by allowing Schery to freely explore her own drive and desire to create, and helping to inspire the lifelong working of the process that is required in any true discipline.
Her artwork is defined by a dynamic expression of color, line, and vibrant energy. Her pieces range in scope from elegant florals to intricate mask collages, abstracts and primitive creature pieces, powerful figurative paintings, and evocative depictions of the bonds of love. The body of work is a diverse spectrum of creative force.
